THE CCTV cameras video clip have contributed to identify some of the victims who were killed in Ekurhuleni, says Premier of Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi.
It has now been confirmed the bodies of 8 women were found in the Ekurhuleni in less than two months, and only two of the victims have been identified so far.
The Premier addressed the nation in the company of other stakeholders on Tuesday evening, on the latest killing of women in Ekurhuleni (place of peace) that has necessitated a call by President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa a national crisis.
As a result an intensive Police investigation has been launched.
Police say although they do not want to treat the cases as linked incidents until investigations prove otherwise, they need all the help they can get, according to Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, who was accompanied by the acting Police Minister Prof Firoz Cachalia, who said: “The government has prioritised this matter.
The President has declared this a national crisis, and I can say that the ministers who are leading on this matter, and for various programs, including the efforts of the South African Police Service, every effort is being made to overcome this terrible scourge,” says Cachalia.
Lieutenant-General Dimpane says: “The 8th victim was picked up from Oliefantsfontein; this particular victim was found or discovered at Clayville River opposite Thembisa Mall. So indeed, we are confirming the issue of the 8th victim.
On arrival, the police found the particular victim in the river and we are dealing with that case.”
Police have offered a cash reward of R400 000, although Prof Cachalia says this trend of offering rewards for information must be treated with care as it might be misinterpreted.
Lt-General Dimpane continued that they have the capacity to deal with these cases and promised they will lockdown City of Ekurhuleni to find the perpetrators.
Authorities have urged the public to come forward with relevant information and avoid speculation.
Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder.
