Isuzu MU-X is in demand by 4×4 enthusiasts’

THE all new Isuzu MU-X is a 7-seat bakkie-based Adventure SUV.

Brash, it overwhelms yours truly from the size perspective, standing at 235 mm ground clearance and a rear diff-lock, shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case.

Though there was no chance for visiting or conducting a game drive or off-road, one thing for certain is, this Japenese made is super safe, handling is top, so was the ruggedness and simplicity associated with it. Yes, 4×4 enthusiasts do want it!

This is informed by genuine off-road credentials fitted in this SUV, even if you’re not planning on taking on anything more serious than your local gravel road, it’s reassuring to know you can tackle tougher routes if needs be.

It also offers softer cushioning throughout the vehicle and additional lumbar support.
Dual-zone climate control for front and rear passengers (standard on Onyx and LSE models only) guarantees a comfortable ride wherever you’re seated.

A height-adjustable steering column (tilt and telescopic) adapts to any driver. A soft-touch leather steering wheel offers controls at your fingertips for driving comfort and safety.

As I took it for a drive, one could tell MU-X is offered with a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel that produces 140 kW/450 Nm and drives the wheels via a 6-speed auto transmission.

It boast 450 Nm of torque on tap – in-gear performance proved more than adequate.

Most turbodiesel-powered bakkie-based SUVs have the aerodynamic properties – and mass – and the Isuzu MU-X is no exception.

Like any claimed fuel economy figure issued by a brand, it’s more of a suggestion than something to bank on. Still, for what it’s worth, the MU-X 3.0TD Onyx is said to consume 7.6 L/100 km, with a full-to-empty range of 1 053 km thanks to its 80-litre tank.

My test unit MU-X test indicated 12.5 km/L on its trip computer, which converts to exactly 8 L/100 km. While most of the route comprised driving on the open road, we still think this figure is commendable, considering the additional weight of the passengers and cargo.

The 3.0TD Onyx has generous leg- and headroom, the roof-mounted aircon controls were easy to figure out and both USB ports were used to charge devices.

For additional convenience, there’s a 220V plug socket too.

The cabin is fitted with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, autonomous emergency braking, heated seats and climate control. Its’ more functional than aspirational! It also features the Isuzu Infotainment System with a high-definition 7-inch or 9-inch WXGA display, usually seen in wide-screen LCD TVs and projectors.

Visually, the MY23 Isuzu MU-X features colour changes to its frontal elements (such as the darker hue of the grille), plus tweaks to the headlights, fog- and taillamps. There are new (and larger) alloy wheels too: LS derivatives are fitted with 18-inch items, while the flagship Onyx version sports new 20-inch rims.

This is highly recommended, as we fast approach festive season for family outings and a bit of Shot’ Left in your country, worthy of a drive. Loved it…living with it!

The updated MU-X (multi, utility-Extreme) is sold with a 5-year/90 000 km service plan and a 5-year/120 000 km warranty, as well as roadside assistance. A 5-year/unlimited km anti-corrosion warranty has been included, and service intervals are every 15 000 km/12 months.
