Reset @ 50 – The Future Calls

A SOUTH AFRICAN government entourage led by President Cyril Ramaphosa descended on the cradle of the Soweto Uprising of June 1976 to commemorate the historic event’s 50th anniversary at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West, on the morning of June 16, 2026.

Hosted by the City of Johannesburg – whose mayor Councillor Dada Morero delivered a brief welcoming speech – the commemoration was observed from the historic precinct, to the vicinity along Moema and Vilakazi streets in Orlando West.

Hosted through the theme: Reset @ 50 – The Future Calls, the Soweto occasion, part of two official commemorations, comprised of the symbolic laying of wreaths at the Hector Pieterson Memorial by dignitaries such as Ramaphosa, Morero, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Lindiwe Dlamini (Hector Pieterson’s sister), et al.

Subsequent to the wreath-laying, President Ramaphosa unveiled a commemorative R2 coin newly-minted by the South African Reserve Bank in tribute to the role of the youth of the June 1976 Soweto Uprising – inside the Hector Pieterson Museum.

The entrance fee into the museum had been waived away for the day – resulting in endless queues of inquisitive pupils flocking into the venue where, in addition to beholding the permanent installation, South African Reserve Bank representatives awaited them to exchange their R2 coins for the newly issued ones.

Hector Pieterson’s sister, Antoinette Sithole, momentarily walked into a crowd of schoolchildren, as if incognito, around the memorial monument – with most of them oblivious to her identity, even though photographer Sam Nzima’s image immortalizing her stood on display not far from where she obliged a photo opportunity for this reporter.

‘Twas a moment of irony that the current cohort of students milling around didn’t recognize her from Adam considering that Nzima’s world-renowned image limning Sithole running alongside her mortally wounded kid brother has since been rated by TIME magazine as among the 100 Most Influential Images of All Time – as well as having helped in the demise of Apartheid.

Other NGO organisations such as the Township Economic Commission SA (TECSA) and Joyride Vintage Brothers also joined in the commemorations, with the former hosting “The People’s Walk” which retraced the 1976 students march from Morris Isaacson High School in Central Western Jabavu, to the Hector Pieterson Memorial Park along Moema Street – and the latter hosting a vintage car show featuring 1960s to 1970s marques along Vilakazi Street.

The streets along Moema and Vilakazi streets were a hive of activities, with students bussed-in from various schools, local visitors, foreign tourists and enterprising baskers and vendors milling around and about to make the day a truly profit-booster for local businesses – complimented by the sight of intrepid youngsters on skateboards surfing the rear ends of tourist busses and cars passing up and down Vilakazi Street.

Erstwhile Robben Island prisoner and renowned Soweto Uprising student leader, Seth Mazibuko had also hosted his own commemoration-related event at the nearby Orlando Amstel Arena in Orlando East.

While all of these events were unfolding, the official entourage moved on to NASREC where President Ramaphosa later addressed the gathered schoolchildren and other guests as part of the South African government’s official event for the day.
