The all new BMW X3 20d embodies the X badge, finish & klaar!

So, in comes the latest BMW X3, the very first of the Bavarian three to enter the medium-size sport utility vehicle or simply put SUV. The other kids go gaga…

I had the pleasure to play, fiddle and ‘God knows what happened’ with the X3 Drive20d recently- boy oh boy- it was divine, thanks to its eight speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

The xDrive20d, uses the same engine in a more powerful state of tune: 140kW/400Nm compared to 110kW/350Nm. It is a familiar power source and one that left a favourable impression, thanks to its torque-enriched ease of momentum and obvious economy benefits.

According to BMW, they’ve included what is called G01 X3, and a newly redesigned interior, an admiration too many, including yours truly. ‘Always ahead of the trend’ as the tag line goes- why not?

The centre console has been adapted from the 4-series. A 12.3-inch central screen is standard across the range; a touch-operated version of the infotainment system is optional.

It boast the aggressive face and the rear light clusters also received attention, outlined by a black border.

The motor is remarkably smooth with excellent suppression of noise and vibration, as I took it to Soweto to visit my aunt, who did not think twice to hop in for a ride.

“This is stylish. Class, ntwana ya ka (my son),” as she pumped her fist with aplomb throughout the panorama glass roof, as boys and girls whistled the ‘kasie’ way.  That’s what a German is made for, Amen to that!

Another key feature is the angular kidney grille and the redesigned bumper with vertical air inlets in the triangular interpretation highlight its exceptional authority.

The Sports seats, both driver and passenger can be operated electronically.

What also impressed many are 20” BMW light alloy wheel Y-spoke jetblack matt. Yes, they’re cool, as per my niece’s admiration.

The X3 20d is fitted with Comfort Access that allows a vehicle doors to open, so is the luggage component without using the key. It’s keyless.

Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 5.6 CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 147.

From safety features, to sought-after offerings fitted in the X3 20d, my conviction is simple- it is time to play with other kids, or kanjani?

BMW Motorplan is included in all new models for 5 years or 100 000 km and may be extended to a maximum of 7 years or 200 000 km.

It retails from xDrive20d: R 997,176

M40i: R 1,415,042

Indeed, things look very different for BMW today. It has a considerably more diverse product portfolio, including a wider array of models embodying the principle of the X badge.

Verdict

Performance 1-10 (8)

Fuel 1-10 (7)
