Too much fanfare, shoppers were treated to a roadshow of the beauty contest by headline sponsor, White Star super maize meal under the catchphrase: Who will be the next Star of Soweto?
Pageant organizer, Collin Sithole mentioned that they had added an innovation of online registration aimed at realizing hundred plus applicants – to this season’s edition!
Ably hosted by actor/radio presenter, Thato Molamu of Greed and Desire-fame, the roadshow also featured promotions which included shoppers who had bought the maize meal at the nearby Pick n Pay outlet on the day, standing a chance of scooping prizes upon presentation of till slips as well as an impromptu best dancer contest on a branded stage.
Famous cabaret songstress, Lucia Mthiyane swopped the mike for a chef’s apron as she manned the mobile kitchen erected next to the stage – from where she whipped dishes of savoury pap with mixed vegetables and butter and lamb curry infused with amasi and cream. Hostesses served helpings of her culinary effort to the appreciative crowd amassed around the court.
Also in attendance was the affable and well-educated Miss Soweto 2015, Buhle Xulu, who, despite her tender age of 21, is already negotiating her path through a B.Comm Honours in financial management with the University of Johannesburg.
Embodying the pageant sponsor’s pay-off line, The Clever Choice – Xulu exuded the sort of poise which served to underpin that the modern contest required brains in addition to beauty, as she took to the stage to briefly address the audience in expounding upon the opportunities such a platform provides for contestants.
Entertaining the crowd, which included the White Star super maize meal brand manager, Ayanda Dubazana, who had flown in from Cape Town especially for the launch – was energetic dance music outfit, Soweto’s Finest which had the attendees enthrall as they put on sweaty performance combining razzmatazz choreography laced with pelvis-grinding routines which had the female segment of the court screaming with delight!
Having chosen Maponya Mall as a launch-pad, the roadshow moves on to other itineraries as it builds towards the day of the pageant itself – due to take place at the Soweto Theater.
