Stofile’s late history within politics goes way back in 1963 as a member of the African Students’ Association‚ an African National Congress (ANC) front organisation‚ but only came to the fore on the political front when he became the regional secretary and a member of the National Executive Committee of the United Democratic Front (UDF)between 1983 and 1986.
Various organizations and leaders continue to send condolences to his family.
“It is with sadness that I have learned of the passing of former Eastern Cape Premier and South Africa’s ambassador to Germany, Rev Makhenkesi Stofile, ” the DA’s Athol Trollip said in a statement.
“On behalf of the Democratic Alliance, I convey our condolences to Rev Stofile’s family and to the ANC on his passing.
“We pray that God will provide them with strength during this difficult time.”
It was not clear at this stage what the cause of death was.
African National Congress spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said they will release a statement as soon as they get a confirmation from the family.
Details on memorial service and burial details were not confirmed at the time of publishing.
