This was confirmed by the office of the Presidency today.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement today that Mthembu died this morning.
“Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, an activist and lifelong champion of freedom and democracy. He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the Minister’s family, to his colleagues, comrades and many friends,” he said.
He was in and out of hospital in the past weeks.
At the time of his death, Mthembu was the minister in the Office of the Presidency.
The Witbank born (Mpumalanga) was also the face of Cabinet at Coronavirus media briefings, former ANC spokesperson and aparliamentarian.
Previously, he served as the Whip of Parliament for the ruling party.
From 1997 to 1999 he served as the MEC for Transport in Mpumalanga, during which he was criticized for spending R2.3 million on ten BMWs.
