The awards were created to be one of SA’s conclusive automotive rewards programme with a list of vehicles recognised to help car buyers make the most informed purchasing decisions, according to Car.co.za
Each vehicle was evaluated by the judging panel who compared it to their rival models in a range of categories with its own requirements – 50% of the final score focused on after-sales for specific brands.
Toyota won the #CarAwards Brand of the Year title for the third time and became the top winner of the programme’s trophy in large numbers, previously it was tied with Suzuki with two big titles.
Toyota won five of the thirteen categories of the 2020/21 programmes, followed by Volkswagen which won three.
Land Rover/Range Rover won the Premium SUV category with its new Defender and finished third in the Brand of the Year category.
In the final round, eighteen brands were represented. Toyota and Suzuki were represented five times, Volkswagen four times, while BMW and Volvo both had three.

Crossover – Toyota C-HR 1.2T Luxury
Premium Crossover – Volvo XC40 T5 AWD R-Design
Hot hatch – Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR
Leisure Double Cab – Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 4×4 Legend Auto
Sports Executive – BMW 330is Edition
The awards were virtual for the very first time due to the pandemic and entertainment was provided by MiCasa and amongst others.
The programme will be repeated on DStv’s 1Magic channel 103 at 21:30 on February 20 and 15:30 and 22:30 on February 23 and 25.
