BAYERN Munich striker had to leave English Premier League to be recognised.
Harry “King” Kane was last night declared the Ballon d’Or for 2026 after unprecedented appearances both for the club and country.
The Englishman outsmarted the much talked about Barcelona, Spain teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and France, Real Madrid striker Killiane Mbappe.
“King” Kane scored remarkable 73 goals across all clubs and international games, and his consistency at his club in Germany has been short of legendary.
He scored 156 goals in 158 appearances- an achievement that was recognised last night.
The captain of England led his charges to their most successful World Cup campaign since 1996, securing a bronze in this year’s WC. He finished fifth-highest scorer in the tournament.
In collecting his Gert Muller trophy, Kane thanked his family for always being supportive and believing in him.
He also had a message for youngsters: ”its always possible when you believe in yourself”.
“For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible”.
“First of all, thanks again to France Football and the Ballon d’Or for this amazing event. Being in London, it is extra special; it felt like a good omen.
“Thank you to everyone for voting for me. I can imagine it was very tough. Thank you to everyone that voted for me.
“It’s just the journey.
“I hope my journey, it wasn’t straightforward, I didn’t go straight to the top, I had to experience a lot of loan moves and fight my way to get to where I am now. I hope that can give you inspiration, and thank you very much,” said the (33) Kane.
The last time an English player won the Ballon d’Or was Michael Owen in 2001.
Meanwhile, Arsenal striker- Bukayo Saka was named winner of the Socrates Award for 2026, for his work in supporting those in need.
The England international has been involved in multiple projects, most notably with Big Shoe, which provides medical care and aid to children and families across the world.
Working with the German foundation, Saka’s support helped fund 120 surgical operations in Nigeria, helping those suffering from illnesses including brain tumours.
Saka’s support also brought aid to those impacted by devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Morocco.
Alongside Mane, Vinicius Junior is also a past winner after taking the 2023 award.
