Today in Parliament, Mbalula made assurances to the media post (State Of Nation Address) cluster that they will be meeting with the Common Wealth GamesFederation to establish way forward.
This follows reports that -Durban the host City- has not met budget criteria to host the games in 2022.
However, should both Government and CGF disagree chances are the games could be canceled.
A terse media statement read: The South African government through cabinet and National Treasury approved the hosting of the games within its framework of fiscal consolidation. The Minister reiterated South Africa’s readiness to host the games within its available means.
It is against this background that the department and the CGF are having talks ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.”
“The Minister further indicated that if both parties fail to find common ground on cost cutting measures, the South African government will not host the games,” read the press statement.
At the time of publishing it was not indicated when or where the meeting will take place.
