“IT HAS dawned on us that the responsibility is big. This responsibility is not easy to comprehend because the journey of local government has undergone a long and complex period,” says the executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Sello Dada Morero.
He was speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) by Gauteng Regional Court President Modibedi Djaje at the Constance Bapela Council Chamber in Braamfontein on Monday, 10 October.
Morero, has also vowed to put the people of Johannesburg at the centre of development and service delivery.
“Leading society requires a leadership that understands where it is coming from and where it is going. Our task is the creation of a non-racial democratic society.”
The Mayor said that “our enemy is not our political opponents, but the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality”.
He stated that the new political leadership was in the business of building better communities and this will be achieved through:
- Creating economic growth, job creation and reducing poverty
- Creating support for the informal economy
- Supporting the growth of small, micro and medium enterprises
- Hundred percent implementation of the Green Economy programme
- Creating sustainable human settlements
- Building a smart city that transforms the lives of residents
