The initiative is part of the department’s Woman’s Month programmes and is aimed at identifying, capacitating and sustaining at least 25 young African women and taking them to compete at national level and have at least two from the Gauteng Province to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games.
“Looking at past and current statistics of young African women involvement in aquatics, it had emerged that support and resources needs to be concentrated at the grass roots level and the need for female coaches and administrators is very imperative for the young girls to succeed in their swimming careers”, said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile.
