Tau reportedly resigned as skipper at the end of September, following Chiefs’ loss to Golden Arrows in a league tie at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
After the game, media reports claimed Vermezovic slammed his senior players for failing to take responsibility on the field, but the club denied that Tau had stepped down. The defender was then dropped for the October 16 clash with Black Leopards and when he made his return in the 2-1 Telkom Knockout loss to Platinum Stars on Sunday, he did so without the armband which was handed to Tinashe Nengomasha. In a post match interview, Vermezovic admitted that Tau was no longer the captain.
“There is no problem between me and Jimmy Tau. I think these stories started after our game against Golden Arrows,” said the Serbian.
“We have four captains and Tinashe is one of them and Jimmy Tau is still our player and you could see today he was fighting very well, but not captain anymore. We will (release) a statement in the next few days, but there is nothing personal between me and him,” he said.
Vermezovic also poured cold water over reports that he lambasted his players after the Arrows match. He said: “I also heard a lot of bad things that I came to the dressing room after the game against Golden Arrows and that I shouted at the players. I was not in the dressing room as I was in the press conference and after that I went to the bus, so that’s nonsense.”
