The brainchild of former football legendary Lucas “Rhoo” Radebe, the one-day tourney is scheduled for June 16 at Diepkloof Zone 4 Grounds opposite Diepkloof Square.
Matches will be played in a knockout format and are scheduled to kick-off at 9am followed by the semi-finals at midday – both the football and netball sections.
Both Netball and Soccer finals will start at 3pm.
The ET Radebe Schools tournament features top seven schools from Diepkloof (Lucas birth place) and one from Orlando.
“After the success of the pilot phase last year, we thought why not give it another shot and stick to having the tournament on one of the most historic days in our country, there’s no better way,” says “Rhoo”.
The staging of the second edition of the tourney, means commemorating the 42nd anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprisings.
He continued:” Sport, especially school’s sport, which hugely contributes to the early development of an athlete’s career, is an integral part of our communities across Soweto.
I’ve always wanted to better serve the people and scholars of Diepkloof, not only by unearthing future soccer and netball stars, but also to honour my late mother.
Till today, I apply the values and discipline I was taught by my late mom,” quipped former Mmabatho Kicks, Kaizer Chiefs, Leeds United and Bafana defender.
Asked on prizes, Radebe told SLM there will be no “monetary value involved” but first prize winners collect medals and floating trophy.
It will also have Best Player, Goalkeeper and Top Goal Scorer of the tournament.
