THE City of Ekurhuleni has reinstated Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa as the spokesperson for its metro police department.
Thepa recently appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she detailed the alleged corrupt dealings of suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
During her testimony, Thepa also revealed that she was assaulted at gunpoint and threatened into silence regarding the corruption she had knowledge of.
Her testimony and the events surrounding it were cited as factors behind what has been described as her unjust removal as the EMPD spokesperson in 2023.
Ekurhuleni spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe said Thepa’s reinstatement is aimed at bringing greater transparency to the EMPD.
“The decision follows an internal review of the EMPD’s communications arrangements and the need to align operational practice with the city’s approved organisational structure, governance prescripts and communication policies.”
