Having being conceived in the coastal Durban, Johannesburg hosted the media launch at the swanky hotel boutique yesterday morning to announce categories.
It was graced by various leading performers within the sector.
“After everything these hard-working professionals have given to us, we should give them something back,” says founder and actress Winnie Modise, who identified the purpose of the awards.
By virtue of being kicked-off at South Africa’s favourite playground, the awards will be held in Durban on November at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.
“We are a nation who lives for our daily dose of Soap Opera action. We invest in the lives of our favourite characters, their storylines dominate our conversations. But we have never given these players a platform to be celebrated and recognised. Until now, that is,” says Modise, who has been in the press other than the awards.
Lethukuthula Mtshali, Head of Communications from the Department of Arts and Culture says: “The Royalty Soapie Awards align perfectly with the Department of Arts and Culture’s vision to help stimulate and support sectors that contributes significantly to social cohesion, nation building and economic empowerment.
Head of Durban Tourism, Phillip Sithole commented that they’re proud to host an event that will undoubtedly rival any other local industry awards. In addition to boosting our travel and tourism sectors, we look forward to showing visitors the magic, beauty and culture of our incredible city.”
Entries open from June 26 and close July 10. Nominees will be announced on September 19 at a glittering function.
