According to Eyewitness News, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department was closely monitoring London Road, which residents have blocked off with burning tyres and rocks, on Wednesday morning.
EWN reported that the residents are unhappy with the electricity meters that the city installed in the Riverpark area of the informal settlement. They claim that the meters cost too much and deplete electricity supplies too quickly.
The city, however, has argued that it was necessary to install the meters because of “illegal connections” and that the meters have no effect on electricity consumption, EWN reported.
